Oil prices rise ahead of Fed chief speech

The price of oil rose to near $95 on Friday as traders awaited a speech by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke for clues on whether the central bank will deliver more help for the struggling U.S. economy.

By midday in Europe, benchmark crude for October delivery was up 31 cents to $94.93 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, the Nymex contract fell 87 cents to close at $94.62.

In London, Brent oil was up 47 cents to $113.12 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Investors will be listening to Bernanke's speech at an economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming later Friday for hints of additional steps to spur borrowing and spending in the U.S.

They are also anticipating the release of manufacturing data out of China this weekend. Worse-than-expected numbers could put pressure on Beijing for more stimulus measures to help revive growth in the world's No. 2 economy.

In other Nymex energy futures trading, heating oil advanced 1.31 cents to $3.138 a gallon, while wholesale gasoline added 1.55 cents to $2.9235 a gallon. Natural gas rose less than 0.08 cent to $2.756 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Facebook, Twitter enhance ad targeting

Menlo Park, Calif.?Facebook Inc. and Twitter both have introduced enhanced behavioral capabilities to their ad products, enabling advertisers to better target the social sites' users.

Next week Facebook will introduce ad retargeting based on users' email addresses, phone numbers and app user identities. This will enable advertisers to reach Facebook users who are current customers using their own customer data. Businesses won't have access to additional Facebook user data, according to Facebook.

With Twitter, advertisers are now able to target their Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts programs to users based on what they follow and retweet. There are 350 interest categories advertisers can choose from, including education, science, law and personal finance, which can be further broken down into additional topics. Twitter also is reducing the minimum price advertisers can bid for an ad campaign to one cent per Promoted Tweet, down from 50 cents.

Idaho State track coach one of three electrocuted, killed in Bingham County canal

Jackie Poulson, a part of the Idaho State track and field program the past 12 years as a student-athlete and assistant coach, was killed Thursday night, the Pocatello school announced Friday.

?She was the pride of our program,? Idaho State head track and field coach Dave Nielsen said. ?She was like daughter to me. This is so untimely and tragic that I just don?t know what else to say.?

The Idaho State Journal reported that Poulson, 31, Michael Lance Hicks, 41, and Preston Keith Tarpley, 49, all of the Blackfoot area, died in an irrigation canal. A dog also died.

A news release from the Bingham County Sheriff said Poulson apparently entered the canal to get her dog when the two of them were electrocuted by a shorted out irrigation pump. At some point, Hicks and Tarpley entered the canal in an attempt to rescue Poulson and they too were electrocuted.

Poulson was going into her ninth year as an assistant coach where she assisted Nielsen in training multi-event athletes. Poulson was a two-time All-American and Big Sky champion in the heptathlon. She also served as the recruiting coordinator for the track and field team. She holds Idaho State records in the 400-meter hurdles.

She was a participant in the Olympic Trials in 2004 and has competed in the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and Italy. She also competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials taking eighth in the heptathlon.

Poulson is from American Falls, where she attended American Falls High. She earned her bachelor?s degree in mass communication from Idaho State in 2003, and was working on her master?s in health education and getting her teacher?s certificate.

?Jackie Poulson influenced the lives of so many of our student-athletes in such a positive manner,? Idaho State Athletic Director Jeff Tingey said. ?She was a true Bengal and an example to us all.?

Samsung wins victory over Apple in Japan court

On Friday, a Japanese court gave Samsung a small boost when it ruled that the Korean company did not infringe on an Apple patent that covers media synchronization between a device and servers. According to a New York Times report, this is one of several patent suits Apple has filed against Samsung in Japan. Still pending is a more important case that claims Samsung's devices infringe on Apple's patented "bounce back" effect. Apple has asked for an injunction in that case, and Samsung has countersued claiming Apple violates its patents.

Samsung, however, was pleased with the small victory it was awarded in Japan. In a statement provided to the media, the company reasserted its position that it does not copy Apple. "Samsung has strongly asserted that its technology is altogether different and does not infringe on Apple patents. The ruling recognizes the legitimacy of Samsung's assertions and is highly valid," it said.

Samsung may have won small legal victories in Japan and Korea, but the company was handed a major setback in the US. In a sweeping win for Apple, Samsung was found guilty of infringement on several Apple patents and trade dress claims. The Korean company faces an injunction against eight of its smartphones and must pay Apple a minimum of US$1.05 billion in damages.
