Halo of neutrinos alters physics of exploding stars

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Sparse halos of neutrinos within the hearts of exploding stars exert a previously unrecognized influence on the physics of the explosion and may alter which elements can be forged by these violent events.

John Cherry, a graduate student at UC San Diego, models stellar explosions, including a type called a core-collapse supernova. As these stars run out of fuel, their cores suddenly collapse to form a neutron star, which quickly rebounds sending seas of neutrinos through the surrounding stellar envelope and out into space.

Even as the collapsed core is rebounding, the rest of the star is still falling inward. Plumes of matter sink, accreting onto the core. "This matter is actually causing some small fraction of neutrinos to bounce at wide angles and cross the trajectories of neutrinos coming from the core," Cherry said.

Astrophysicists knew that the heart of that envelope contained these scattered neutrinos, but because they are relatively few compared with the numbers streaming from the core, they thought their influence on the physics of these explosions would be so minor it could be ignored. Not so, Cherry and colleagues demonstrated in a paper they published in Physics Review Letters. They showed that neutrinos streaming from the core interacted with halo neutrinos far more often than anticipated.

Cherry calculated how often that might occur and how large a difference it would make to their models of neutrinos within supernovae. "What was so startling about this is that nowhere was the correction less than 14 percent. That's enough that you need to worry about it," he said. Indeed, the some places in the outer regions of the envelope require as much as a 10 fold correction.

Neutrinos are famously aloof particles that seldom interact with other matter. "The way neutrinos interact in matter depends on what we call 'flavor'," said George Fuller, professor of physics at UC San Diego who leads the neutrino-modeling research group and is a co-author of the paper.

When neutrinos meet, they "scatter" off one another and in the process can change their flavor. The influence is much greater than physicists thought in the outer halo of neutrinos. "Even though few neutrinos are scattered in funny directions, they can completely dominate how the neutrinos change their favors," Fuller said.

And the balance of neutrino flavors determines many important things."The neutrinos are the engine that drives the exploding star," Cherry said. "What's going on with neutrinos sets the entire stage for what's happening in the explosion."

These stars also forge new elements, and neutrino flavor influences this process as well.

"Those neutrino flavor states allow the neutrinos to change protons to neutrons or neutrons to protons." Cherry said. "What matter is produced, what kinds of atoms, elements are produced by these supernovas are changed dramatically if you change the flavor content of neutrinos."

Private Greta Garbo goes public in celebrity auction

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - She was renowned for her beauty and fierce sense of privacy, but later this year, fans of film legend Greta Garbo will get the chance to own one of more than 800 items of her wardrobe and home decor, including the bed she slept in.

Julien's Auctions said on Wednesday it would sell gowns, pant suits, furniture and art - ranging from a dress Garbo wore to dinner with President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy to an inflatable snowman the actress kept in her living room for laughs - at auction in Beverly Hills, California, on December 14 and 15.

"She is forever alluring and mysterious and timeless and she's very modern," her great-nephew Derek Reisfield told Reuters when describing the appeal of Garbo.

The Swedish actress started her Hollywood career in silent movies such as 1927's "Flesh and the Devil" and was among the few actors to move successfully to talkies, becoming iconic not only for her beauty but for her brains and the streak of independence she displayed on film and in her personal life.

She earned four Academy Award nominations, her first for 1929's "Anna Christie," and was finally given an honorary award for unforgettable performances by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1954.

Garbo retired from movies in 1941 and lived a very private life in New York until she died in 1990 at age 84.

After leaving Hollywood, she preferred to stay out of the public eye and only shared her sharp sense of humor with mostly family and friends, according to Reisfield, who said the family had kept his great-aunt's belongings in storage until now.

He said that around 2004, as his family prepared to mark 100 years since her birth on September 18, 1905, they decided it was time to begin to share more of her life with the public, which eventually led to the upcoming auction.

"We realized you really do have a responsibility to try to enhance and protect her legacy, and that started a whole evolution in our thinking," Reisfield said.

A total of 853 items will go under the hammer, ranging from high-fashion dresses and tailored trousers to shoes and Garbo's luxurious cashmere turtlenecks from designers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo and Hubert Givenchy.

There will also be photographs from her Hollywood heyday, as well as furniture, art and other items from her New York apartment and Swedish manor. Up for sale is her bed, which Garbo designed using antique Swedish carvings to reflect her Scandinavian heritage.

Reisfield said he had no idea what was the most valuable item in the auction. "There are so many amazing things that I don't think anyone can predict," he said.

The items go on display at the Newbridge Silverware Museum in County Kildare, Ireland, starting September 29. They will set sail in November for the United States on Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2, on which Reisfield will speak about Garbo's life and career.

Indian opposition to block parliament until PM resigns

India's opposition vowed on Wednesday to block parliamentary proceedings until the prime minister resigned over a coal scandal, raising the prospect of more legislative deadlock and stalled reforms.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was implicated by the national auditor in a report published last Friday which suggested the government had lost out on billions of dollars of revenue by gifting away coal mining rights.

Singh, who has seen his reputation as "Mr Clean" plummet amid a string of scandals in his second term in government, served as acting coal minister from 2004-2009.

Senior opposition leader Arun Jaitley said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would obstruct parliamentary proceedings until the 79-year-old Singh took personal responsibility and stepped down.

"Parliamentary obstructionism is normally to be avoided, but in rare cases parties do adopt it," Jaitley told the Times Now television channel in an interview as both houses of parliament were adjourned.

"The way forward is that the prime minister must accept his culpability. The reason is very obvious. For five out of the eight years (analysed by the auditor)... he himself was the coal minister," Jaitley added.

The threat to disrupt parliament comes as India's economy is badly faltering, with investors and business leaders looking for decisive action from the under-fire government to restore confidence and spur economic growth.

In 2010, the BJP and opposition allies blocked an entire session of parliament, forcing adjournments for 22 business days in a row which meant no legislation was passed.

The report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said private companies had made windfall gains of about $33.4 billion since 2004 after being given mining rights via a process that "lacked transparency and objectivity".

The government had known of the huge profits for private operators, but had failed to introduce an open bidding process that would have brought in revenue for the national exchequer, the CAG said.

The report did not contain any allegations of corruption or criminal practices.

California Lawsuit Claims Smart Parking Meters Caused Disease

Is it possible for smart parking meters to adversely affect your health? As noted by ABC Radio News, one Santa Monica, Calif., woman firmly believes so and has filed suit, asking for $1.7 billion in compensation.

What are the plaintiff's claims?

The plaintiff claims that radiation given off by the parking meters is responsible for ear infections, irregular menstrual cycles and back pains. When asked about the large sum of money noted in the suit, the plaintiff told the news outlet "I figured that's the value of my life and health considering how much I had to go through as a child."

Is it possible that Santa Monica's smart parking meters emit too much radiation?

Recounting a conversation with the City of Santa Monica's assistant finance director, the Santa Monica Daily Press highlights that the suit is the first recorded complaint about health problems connected to parking meters. While he acknowledges that the meters do use Wi-Fi technology, he points out that the radius of communication is only between five and eight feet. Moreover, communications only takes place when cars arrive, depart or consumers engage in credit card transactions.

Are the local smart parking meters a new phenomenon?

KABC TV reported in May on the changes in Santa Monica's parking meter technology. Rather than allowing the meters to tick down -- even if a car had departed -- meters would reset to zero automatically as soon as a driver left. These capabilities were already programmed into the meters when they were installed in March 2011.

Whereas the Santa Monica lawsuit alleges physical ailments as a direct result of parking meter technology, prior to this incident there were already consumer protests in the Golden State. HP has $8.9B loss on expected charge for EDS flop

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard says it suffered an $8.9 billion loss during its most recent quarter as the technology company accounted for an acquisition that hasn't panned out the way management envisioned.

The setback isn't a surprise. Hewlett-Packard Co. had telegraphed the news earlier when it disclosed plans to take an $8 billion charge to reflect the shrinking value of Electronic Data Systems, a technology consulting service that it bought for $13 billion in 2008.

The fiscal third-quarter loss announced Wednesday translates to $4.49 per share. It's by far the biggest quarterly setback in HP's 73-year history. The company earned $1.9 billion, or 93 cents per share, at the same time last year.

HP's revenue sank 5 percent from last year to $29.7 billion. That was about $500 million below analyst projections.

GuardedID is a $30 app from StrikeforceTechnologies that encrypts everything the user types before sending the data to the Web browser. The goal is to prevent malicious keyloggers that may be on the user's computer from intercepting sensitive information such as login credentials, financial information such as credit card numbers, and other sensitive data.

Many malware attacks rely on keyloggers to intercept keystrokes, which are then transmitted to a remote server. Attackers can use the harvested data to launch further attacks, such as identity theft or financial fraud. Keyloggers are stealthy, and most users aren't even aware their computers are infected. Some of these malicious programs can bypass the antivirus, so having security software installed doesn't automatically translate to being protected. Strikeforce just assumes that the computers are already infected, and proactively protects users with GuardedID.

There have been many instances recently where one employee at a company was infected with a keylogger, giving attackers access to the company's bank accounts and other sensitive information. IT departments can get bulk licenses to protect all the machines, or at the very least, the ones used to access sensitive data.

An annual software license for GuardedID covers two computers and is available for $29.99. Users can download the software and try it for free for 30 days. I tested GuardedID version 3 premium build 3.1.1049, and not the free trial.

Getting Started
As soon as the installation process completed, the installer program launched a page in the Web browser with the GuardedID toolbar visible in the top left corner. In case the toolbar was not visible, the user could enable it by clicking on the link, "Make toolbar appear." The page has other links to activate the software (entering the license key) and access help files.

GuardedID protects most Windows applications, including Web browsers, Microsoft Office applications, tax and accounting programs, financial sites, and IM and chat programs. I tested various Websites in the browser, two chat programs, and Microsoft Excel as part of the review.

GuardedID protects itself from attackers. It hooks into the operating system's Event Viewer and logs messages if the GuardedID keyboard driver is ever modified (such as by malicious keyloggers and spyware). If something is changed, the software displays an "Unknown Driver Warning" to alert the user of the problem.

Browser-Specific Installation
GuardedID protects Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox but not Google Chrome. When running the installer, it detects which browsers are on the machine and installs the protection software for one or both browsers. I first ran the installation on a machine with Internet Explorer only to install only the IE version of the toolbar. I verified this by installing Firefox afterwards. I re-ran the installation program in order to get the toolbar in both IE and Firefox. I just wish a Chrome version had been available.

Going Through the Paces
GuardedID monitors every page that is loaded in the browser and looks for input fields and other text areas. If it finds one, the GuardedID icon on the toolbar turns green, the active input field (the cursor appears in the field) is highlighted green. The highlight is a great visual cue that whatever is typed within that field is being encrypted (128-bit) and protected from malicious snoops. ?

GuardedID is "on" only for the active text field, so the remaining text fields on the page aren't highlighted. When the user moves to a new field, that field is then highlighted. When I clicked on other parts of the site or started typing in the URL bar, the GuardedID icon on the toolbar switched "off" to red and none of the fields were highlighted.

It took a while to get used to the constant switching on and off while I navigated around the page, but it is not a distraction and actually works pretty well.

For most of the sites I tested, which included several banking sites, search engines, social networking sites, and e-commerce sites, GuardedID turned on immediately as the page loaded, with the a field (search, username, first name, etc) on the page highlighted in green. On a few of the sites, there was a bit of a lag between when the page loaded and when the protection kicked in. There were two sites, a bank's website for credit card holders, and a Web-based chat window, that didn't trigger the protection automatically. I suspect it has to do with how the page was coded than issues with the software. As soon as I clicked on the field to type, GuardedID turned on, so the fact that it didn't auto-detect wasn't a problem. The sites had no trouble with sites built in Java, which was an improvement from earlier versions.

The tool also has an "anti-clickjack" option, which detects whether the website has any hidden frame elements that could trick users into clicking on malicious links. If the software finds frame elements, it draws a red box around them. There are two techniques commonly used in clickjacking: "Opacity" refers to when an invisible malicious page is overlayed over another site. "Positional" refers to when the malicious link is hidden because it is surrounded with legitimate content. GuardedID detects both.

Testing With the Keylogger
I downloaded a commercial keylogger (Beyond Kelogger from Supremtec) and four non-commercial (shall we say, "not legitimate") keyloggers onto the test machine to see what GuardedID was doing. The test was simple: type on the computer in one of the applications? Web browser, IM chat, or Excel?and look at what was captured with the keylogger.

After verifying that the keystrokes were being captured, I opened up the Web browser to see GuardedID in action. I went to Google, Amazon, and Google Docs. On each site, I verified that GuardedID auto-enabled the protection. When I started typing in the input field, the keylogger's log screen displayed a series of numbers. There didn't appear to be a pattern such as a number assigned to a specific letter.

It is worth mentioning that many keyloggers are capable of logging other things, such as taking screenshots, storing clipboard contents, saving IM conversations, and poking through the browser history. GuardedID is specifically focused on just keystrokes, nothing else.

Protect Yourself
GuardedID encrypts everything the user types on the machine in order to protect the data. The browser toolbar makes it easy to protect email and website communications. Since GuardedID also works offline, users are protected even if they don't know whether the computer is infected. The lack of Chrome and Mac OS X support is disappointing, but the simple tool is lightweight and does not distract users from getting work done. For a business, this tool is useful for ensuring all data is safe from snoops that have gotten between the keyboard and the screen.
